Pioneering New Battery Technology

NosTerra CEO Dave Welch (L) moderates a discussion with Noon Energy CEO Chris Graves (R)

It was great to see an energized crowd who came with many thoughtful questions to our live event “Accelerating Our Transition to a Carbon-Free Electricity Grid” on Sept. 11. In the renewable energy sector, long duration energy storage at scale has been a critical technology gap, so it was wonderful to hear Noon Energy’s perspective on how we might economically close that gap and pave the way towards a low-cost, low-carbon energy future.

“The reason that we're doing this and the timing is right, is that solar and wind are now the lowest cost electricity sources.…Cost is definitely the driving factor in our eyes for the energy transition.”

— Chris Graves, CEO, Noon Energy

The audience came with many questions to Noon Energy CEO Chris Graves’ talk on Sept. 11, 2023, at NosTerra’s Menlo Park offices

A few key points from the event:

  • Renewable energy adoption is accelerating, but when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, we continue to rely on fossil fuel sources.

  • To change that, we need long duration energy storage (aka LDES) of 200 hours or more to make renewable energy available around the clock and on demand.

  • Noon Energy’s technology is energy dense, compact, and utilizes abundant and low-cost materials: carbon and oxygen. Their technology aims to be 10x lower in cost and 3x lighter and smaller than traditional batteries.
